Christmas – Page 2 – Miriam Thomas

Category: Christmas

I hope you’re not all “Christmassed out” because I have a few more Christmassy things to share with you.  Yesterday I finally finished packing up my Christmas tree and got it out of the house for another 11 months.  I have packed away the Chrissy cards….but before boxing everything away I snapped a few photos of some handmade cards that I received at Christmas time.

The first card was made by Liisa- It was the first handmade card to hit my letterbox and I was so chuffed that she had gone to so much trouble….  Liisa has used the Christmas stamp from the  “Cute and Curly” Stamp set punch and the matching curly label punch.  I think the Riding hood red striped grosgrain ribbon really finishes the card off- don’t you agree?

The second card was made by one of my best customers (and she also happens to be my sister 🙂 )  Linda has used the “Season of Joy Stamp” set and a selection of some of my favourite prints from the “Holiday Treasures” and “Ski Slope” Designer series paper packs.   I love layered cards- and think she has done a wonderful job!

The third card was made by Gail. I just love the use of the “Snow Swirled” stamp set to create these adorable baubles.  Gail created a trim with the Eyelet border punch and each ‘bauble’ was punched out using the scallop circle punch.

Gail also made this adorable box filled with little Santa chocolates and a lovely Christmas decoration.  This was a little gift that Gail had made for a little present exchange game at Playgroup.  The game involved making the choice between selecting a pressie from under the tree OR being able to “steal” a pressie from anyone else who had already made a selection.  Lucky ol’ me was last to have a turn so I was able to select any present I liked.  I am sure you will agree that it was worth “Stooping to stealing” just to be able to bring this home with me!

I’m sure you will agree that I am very lucky to be surrounded by such creative people!

With the Summer holidays bringing a change of pace to our little household I managed to find some time for some scrapbooking.  I have snapped a few photos to share with you…so please be sure to come back tomorrow.

My Christmas cards

Ahhhhh! – I hope everyone enjoyed a lovely Christmas yesterday and relaxing Boxing day today.  One of the kids asked me why it was called Boxing day and I told them it was because our house was filled with lots of boxes.   (It is only a white lie because the origins of “boxing day” does involve boxes- just not the mountains of boxes in our house!)   We still have lots of packaging around the house…and even gifts still inside the packaging and LOADS of toys and gifts that don’t have a home yet….I’m really not sure where I am going to put it all.  Next we are hoping that we will be celebrating Christmas in our new house (that we are building just up the road from here) Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Well- now that Christmas Day is over and (hopefully) everyone has received their cards then I can finally post my Christmas cards here.  This year’s design happened quite by accident.  You see I like to incorporate a photo of my kids on the front of the card.  This year I had 4 separate photos that I arranged in two rows of two photos (like a window with 4 window panes)  I had seventy images printed off but when I went to make my card I realised it was too large to fit on my card front nicely (and still be able to add a bit of embellishment)  I decided to make an INTERACTIVE card instead.  I cut each photo out individually and added them to a strip.  When you pull on the bottom tab the photos flip over one by one.

Here are some images to show you what I mean.  Heres is the front of the card…

Pull gently on the tab and the photo starts to flip up and over

Keep pulling down on the tab and the second photo is revealed…….

Up goes the second photo…..

……and the third photo is revealed

Keep pulling and the fourth and final photo is revealed.  The Christmas message on the tab has also been revealed.

Here are just some of my cards waiting for me to add my Christmas messages and address the envelopes! I hope everyone who received a card was able to work out how to flip the photos over.  (Jason- my helpful husband thought I should include operating instructions on the inside!)

The truth is that it wasn’t that tricky.  I would be more than happy to show you how! I have quite a few spots available for January.  If you book a workshop I would be happy to show you and your friends how to make a variation of this card.  January is also a great time to book a workshop because there are loads of stamps sets drastically reduced until the 24th of January!  Check out the savings to be made!!!  If you aren’t able to host or attend a workshop in January and would like to take advantage of these great specials, please feel free to give me a call or send me an E-mail.  I would be more than happy to process an order for you and I can have it shipped to you anywhere in Australia! OR (08) 90917655 or 0419 947 047.

Before signing off- here is a photo of my 4 cherubs with Santa!  Those with 4 children can appreciate just how tricky it is to get a photo with all 4 kids looking in the general direction of the camera.  Aren’t they cute?

The Summer Mini is here

I am so thrilled that the Summer Mini Catalogue commences today!

There is SOOO much Yummy stuff in the catalogue that I really don’t know where to begin.  You can check it out online on the link to your right.  My wonderful customers will start receiving their own copy in the mail very soon! Please keep an eye out for your copy.  If you don’t receive one soon- and would like one- please let me know and I will happily post one to you!

One of my favourite items from the catalogue is the circle scissors.  It is a neat tool that allows you to cut circles up to 16cm.  You use the circle scissors on a glass cutting mat (also available in the Summer Mini Catalogue)  I also recommend purchasing some dotto (main catalogue) to temporarily hold the cardstock in place when cutting.  Here it is- ready to make a cut in some Close to Cocoa cardstock…..

You can also use it to cut “rings”  (as pictured below)

I used the close to cocoa circle and more mustard ring on the following project- A notepad holder.

and here is the notepad holder open

Isn’t that stamped image on the cover just divine!?  It is a stamp from the new Summer Catalogue called “Razzle Dazzle”  The moment I saw it- it was added to my “must have” list!

So…. what are you waiting for?  Go check out the catalogue.  If you want to start ordering the items on your “must have” list- please be sure to get in touch with me.  I am more than happy to play “Secret Santa” if you have a long wish list and would like to receive the gift of Stampin’ Up products for Christmas.   Please get your “significant other” to  get in touch with me. I will even gift wrap your products so all you need to do is pop it under the tree.   To guarantee delivery prior to Christmas- please place your orders before the 10th of December.  Gift vouchers are also available (right up until Christmas Eve)

MINI ALBUM INSTRUCTIONS (Instructions only- No products included)

One of the cards we created recently at one of In-Home Cardmaking workshops was a Tri-shutter Christmas card.  We used the Winter Post stamp set and Holiday Treasures patterned paper. The ladies looked at the sample and gulped but when it came time to make their card, they realised it wasn’t nearly as difficult as it first appeared.

Here’s the card

Now C’mon admit it- Did you gulp in amazement?  Yes?  Good! That’s the reaction you want when your recipient opens their card.  Now pick your jaw up off the ground and I will show you just how simple this card is to make!!

Start with a piece of cardstock that is 30cm x 15cm

Score fold lines at 5cm, 10cm, 20cm and 25cm (Using the scoring blade on your paper trimmer or your bone folder)

Use your paper trimmer to cut along the PURPLE lines in the following illustration.  (The purple line is measured in at 4cm from the each edge)  The paper trimmer available through Stampin’ Up! allows you to position the blade so that you can commence cutting at the 5cm score line and stop cutting when you reach the 25cm score line.   The paper cutter is only $39.95 (pg 155 of the catalogue)  If you don’t own this paper trimmer please let me know and I would be happy to process the order for you!

You now need to fold your card into position.  If you look at the following photo (taken from above) you will get the best idea of how the pieces should be positioned.

Here is card again folded into position ready to go into an evelope

To decorate the card- the following measurements may come in handy (This is especially for you L  🙂 )

Cut your cardstock mats to the following sizes

2 pieces that are 14.5cm x 4.5cm

4 pieces that are 3.5cm x 4.5cm

1 piece that is 6.5cm x 9.5cm

2 pieces that are 6.5cm x 4.5cm

2 pieces that are 3.5cm x 9cm

The patterned paper needs to be cut according to the following measurements

2 pieces cut at 14cm x 4cm

4 pieces cut at 3cm x 4cm

1 piece cut at 6cm x 9cm

2 pieces cut at 6cm x 4cm

2 pieces cut at 3cm x 9cm

I hope you have fun creating your own Tri-shutter card!

Merry and Bright…….

I must admit that I am someone who loves traditional Christmas colours but of course there are so many ways to make non-traditional colours look “Christmassy”

Here is a card I have created using non-traditional colours.

The card base is Tempting Turquoise with Rose Red, Old Olive and Whisper White.    To create the background I have stamped an image from “Frames with a Flourish“.  The rest of the card is comprised of images from “Season of Joy“.  The gorgeous swirly Christmas tree has an edge of Fine Supernova glitter.  Do you like how straight I managed to get the strip of Turquoise glitter?  No! My hands are not that steady! I placed a piece of sticky strip across the cardstock. When you peel the top layer it reveals the perfect sticky surface to adhere the supernova glitter!

Cards with a frame

I have a few cards to show you today that were all created with a “frame” around the main image in the card.  Creating a frame like this allows you to add another “layer” of colour without having to add too many layers of cardstock.    It is not unusual for me to create a mat by putting one piece of cardstock on top of another.  The reality is that most of this cardstock won’t be visible.  By creating a “frame” like this- you can cut away the centre piece that may not have been visible and use it on another card.

The first card is for a friend who turns 40 soon.  He actually celebrated his 40th birthday on the weekend- and had the celebrations early due to the chaos that surrounds the silly season.  To be honest- I think his 40th marked the beginning of the silly season.  I am embarrassed to admit that I actually had a mild hangover the following day (the first one in a long time! )  I don’t think I had too much to drink though- I think it was just the mix of drinks I had.  Anyway- I had a great time but enough of my rambling…..Here’s the card

Stamp sets: “More Thoughts” and “On Your Birthday”

Cardstock colours: Basic Black, Basic Grey

Patterned paper: Walk in the Park, Urban Garden

Other: Onboard Timeless Type Chipboard, Silver Jumbo Brad, Metal edge tag

Tools: paper cutter, Paper crimper, corner rounder punch

The second card is a simple elegant Christmas card.  A mask and a sponge dauber was used to create the Christmas baubles in Bravo burgundy ink.  The Very Vanilla ribbon and a simple elegant greeting from “Occasional Greetings” finished off the card nicely.  I have used an item from the yet to be released Summer Mini Catalogue.  Can you pick what I have used?

The final card for today is another Christmas card made using the “Spotlight on Christmas” Stamp set.  I just love the Poinsettia in this set (which fits nicely on the 5 petal flower punch)   Poinsettia’s always remind me of Christmas and I love them because of the lovely rich red of the flower (One of my favourite colours)    Most people I know are familiar with poinsettia’s being small potted plants, however my parents have a large shrub in their front garden with a big well established trunk.  My Dad seems to chop it back reguarly but it always comes back with a lovely bloom of rich red flowers.  Anyway- back to the card

I used a mask again to create the border around the edge of the card and also on the poinsettia’s on one of the whisper white squares.

Can you believe that only a month remains before Christmas!?  It’s not too late to make your own Christmas cards.  Please get in touch if you would like to order some items.  Please don’t forget that ONLY FIVE days remain of the Spring Mini Catalogue.  The next mini catalogue does not contain ANY Christmas images so if there is a Christmas set that you fancy- please be sure to get your order in within the next 5 days before the Spring Mini items are no longer available!

Woah- The Countdown to Christmas has begun! It is hard to believe that it will be Christmas day in less than 50 days.  I plan to make Christmas cards for family and friends.  I know not everyone is as eager as me- but I’m sure you can think of special people in your life who deserve the gift of a handmade card!
